Drug cartels shipping from China to Mexico via the USA.
2011-09-01

A recent U.S. drug bust shows that trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border is a two-way street.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Los Angeles said Thursday they intercepted 520 pounds of a chemical used in illegal drugs like methamphetamine and ecstasy -- contraband caught not while it was coming into the United States from Mexico but while it was traveling south out of the U.S.

The meth component was being sent from China to drug traffickers in Mexico.

The chemical, methylamine hydrochloride, was discovered in August at an air cargo facility at Los Angeles International Airport, the agency said. Judging by the shipment's size, it could have produced 330 pounds of the drug methamphetamine.

Suspected Mexico drug cartel bosses arrested in Utah
2011-09-01

SALT LAKE CITY - Federal agents arrested several suspected bosses of a Mexican drug syndicate in a move authorities said Wednesday decimated a Utah-based cell of the Sinaloa cartel.

At least seven arrests were made Tuesday after raids at a home in South Jordan, a South Salt Lake restaurant and along Interstate 15 in southern Utah.

The takedown was part of an 18-month investigation that yielded more than 30 arrests in Utah, California and Nevada, said Sue Thomas, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"It was a great day," Thomas said. "We removed the cell head, who was the guy who was coordinating the shipments coming to Utah from Mexico and

China Manufacturing Base points to pickup!
2011-09-01

Of course when you read the article under this misleading headline... you see a different picture. They use the term Marginal improvment under a photo..Yoda

China’s official Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 50.9 in August, up from July’s 50.7, and was roughly in line with expectations for a reading of 51, according to surveys reported by Reuters and Bloomberg News.

The result marked the first increase in activity since March.

Meanwhile, a rival survey published by HSBC and U.K. group Markit showed headline activity at 49.9 in August, up from July’s 49.3, and slightly higher than a preliminary “flash” reading of 49.8 issued in August.

Manufacturing activity nudged up at a marginal pace during August, ending a two-month decline for the HSBC edition.

“This set of PMI data is slightly better than expected, but does not change the main trend of slowing investment and weakening exports,” wrote Credit Suisse analyst Dong Tao in a note following the release of the manufacturing surveys.

In spite of the debt problems in the U.S. and Europe recently, China’s economy had held up well, Tao said, noting that chances of a big downturn there now appeared unlikely.

Meanwhile, Capital Economics said given all the global uncertainty investors could find reassurance from the fact that China’s PMIs have “at least stopped falling.”

Containers Slump to 50-Year Low as Sales Slow.
2011-09-01

Aug. 31 (Bloomberg) -- The container-shipping industry is contending with the longest stretch of near-zero rates in its half-century history on the Asia-to-Europe route, as a capacity glut combines with the slowest growth in trade since 2009.

Commerce on the world’s second-busiest container route rose 4.2 percent in the second quarter, the weakest since the end of 2009, Woking, England-based Container Trade Statistics Ltd. estimates. Rates excluding fuel surcharges were “practically” zero in July and little changed this month, the worst run ever, said Menno Sanderse, an analyst at Morgan Stanley in London.

While growth in container volumes has slowed for four consecutive quarters, it’s still nowhere near the 22 percent contractions seen in the first half of 2009. Europe normally imports more goods this quarter as shops begin stockpiling for the December holidays. That gain may be curbed this year as retailers anticipate mounting concern about economies and jobs will hurt consumer spending.

“If you’re a large retailer and you have this turmoil, you’re going to be worried,” said Lars Jensen, chief executive officer of Copenhagen-based SeaIntel Maritime Analysis, which advises shipping companies and ports. “Will people shop or not for Christmas or will they shop more or less than usual? The more uncertain you are, the more you are likely to err on the side of caution on the procuring side.”

Hey! They really are listening!
2011-09-01

I am stopped at the Travel Center of America in Terrell, Texas. I like to come here any time I have to hang out in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex area to get away from the city, and because they have concrete for a parking lot instead of asphalt. The air is cooler in the summer time with concrete.

I unloaded Wednesday and might have stayed at the drivers in Anna, but the lure of the free showers and a restraunt I have been eating at for years drew me out here to Terrell. I did enjoy the shower, and the wait staff and cooks at the restaurant are still doing a pretty good job of keeping the food from being boring.

Something new has appeared here, and I talked to the employee who services it. In fact he said he had only installed it a few days ago, so I took pictures and made a small video. TCA has listened to pet owing truck drivers and at least in this location is beginning to crate a “pet area”.

Fuy as fine-gold dolls "go rusty"
2011-08-31

THE Bank of China's gold fuwa dolls (good luck dolls), mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and said to be made of "99.9 percent fine gold" are "rusting," according to the state television CCTV.
A man surnamed Chen from China's eastern Jiangsu Province said he spent 28,600 yuan (US$4,480) on 38 of the dolls issued by the bank in December 2007, but he found "rust stains" on the dolls' bodies last November, CCTV reported last week.
Chen said he bought the dolls as an investment and put them on top of a wardrobe at his home. He inspected them three years later to find red stains all over them.

4 Mexico Navy kidnapped
2011-08-15

By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON
Associated Press
MEXICO CITY (AP) - Three Mexican marines and a naval academy cadet have been kidnapped in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz this month and navy officials said Monday they think drug traffickers are behind the abductions.
It is the first time in recent memory that navy personnel have been abducted and could be the result of the navy's increasing role in President Felipe Calderon's war on drug cartels. Mexican marines have led raids that have captured or killed top drug lords.
The naval cadet has been missing since Aug. 8, when he failed to show up at his base, and the three marines were last seen Aug. 1 when they were snatched from a private car while undergoing training in the city of Veracruz, the navy said in a statement.

Murder linked to stolen drug many!
2011-08-10

Costa Rican authorities raided several homes and businesses on Tuesday in an effort to arrest Alejandro Jimenez Gonzalez who is accused of leading an organized crime group involved in money laundering with operations around Central America, Costa Rican Attorney General Jorge Chavarria told reporters.

Chavarria said authorities believe a rift over a theft of illegal drug money led to the July 9 attack that Guatemalan authorities think was aimed at Henry Fariñas, who survived.

LATER IN THE ARTICLA

Guatemala is a country riddled with violence, where law enforcement institutions are in shambles and corruption reaches the highest levels of government. Its homicide rate triples that of Mexico, and its notoriously weak rule of law system lets more than 95% of criminals walk free. The growing presence of Mexican and Colombian cartels, pushed out of their home countries due to intensive antidrug campaigns, has only made matters worse.
